School of Marxism

Established on September 22, 2007, School of Marxism, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the first of its kind in Hubei area, is the specialized institution for teaching ideological and political theories in the University. Apart from one affiliated unit, namely, Research Centre for Marxism of the University, it has 2 departments and 3 institutes, including No.1 Department of Ideological and Political Education (for undergraduates), No.2 Department of Ideological and Political Education (for postgraduates), Institute of Fundamental Principles of Marxism, Institute of Sinicized Marxism, and Institute of Ideological and Political Education.

Staffed by 5 Professors, 26 Associate Professors, 19 lecturers, and 6 administrative staffs and auxiliary teaching staffs, it prides itself on running Ph.D. Programs and Master’s Programs (Marxist Theory). It is under the leadership of Hong Ming (Dean of the School), Zhang Chuanping (Party Secretary), Huang Changyi (Vice Dean), Liu Jiajun (Vice Dean) and Duan Xichun (Vice Dean).

Its precursor was Teaching and Research section of Marxism of the University’s School of Engineering, based on which the School of Engineering’s division of Social Science was founded in 1978. After the Reform and Opening up, a number of arts schools and departments were set up successively in the University, such as School of Economics, Department of Journalism, Department of Sociology and Institute of Philosophy, and in the meanwhile, 3 teaching and research sections of the former Department of Social Science, namely, Political Economics Section, History of CPC Section, and Philosophy Section, were merged into School of Economics, Department of Journalism and Institute of Philosophy, respectively. In addition, some staff members were transferred to Department of Sociology. In doing so, it contributed to the development of the school and departments mentioned above. Afterwards, in response to changes in curriculums and the development of disciplines, it was renamed and adjusted several times. Specifically, it was renamed as Department of Social Science in 1985, as Department of Political Education in 1992, as Department of Politics and Law in 1997, and as Department of Political Education in 2002, which was affiliated to the University’s School of Humanities, then in 2005 merged with Tongji Medical Collegel’s Division of Social Science to form independent Department of Political Education, and finally became School of Marxism on September 22, 2007.

The School is responsible for teaching Ideological and Political Theories to students at all levels of the University, including undergraduates, post-graduates, and students from School of Continuing Education. Bearing in mind the teaching concept of “making students truly love it”, “making students actively participate in it” and “making students gain lifelong benefits from it”, we constantly deepen teaching reforms and make classroom teaching more attractive and more pragmatical. In recent years, we have stuck to systems of collective courses preparation and teacher classroom observation. Since the implementation of the “05 Plan” for College Ideological and Political Education, we have successively invited the following University’s leaders to take part in our collective courses preparation: University’s Former Party Secretary Zhu Yuquan, University’s Party Secretary Lu Gang, University’s Deputy Party Secretary Ouyang Kang, President of the University Li Peigen, and they came up with many precious suggestions. In particular, President Li personally gave freshmen the first lesson of “Ideological and Moral Cultivation and Fundamentals of Law”, making a great sensation among students. Before each curriculum is given, collective courses preparation is conducted several times so that teachers can learn from each other and teaching contents, teaching methods and slides styles can be unified according to syllabi. Moreover, each teacher is required to have classroom observation 4 times per semester and to take part in collective evaluation of course so that problems can be found and corrected in time. The practice has proved that these measures work very well. For example, in the student evaluation of teaching quality, each curriculum in the “05 Plan” for College Ideological and Political Education has been scored above 90; Ideological and Political Education class has become one of the most popular classes; and the rate of “Excellent Class” has almost reached 100%. What is more, some media, including Xinhua News, China Youth Media, China Education Daily, Hubei Daily and CCTV, reported these achievements, creating quite a stir across the country. Besides teaching, the School has also made contribution to discipline construction, scientific research and talents training.
